Postcards from Holland

This series is an artistic response to Emily Perl Kingsley’s Essay Welcome to Holland, where the author likens having a child with disabilities to landing in Holland when you’ve planned a trip to Italy.  The journey involves purchasing new guide books, changing expectations and finding the beauty in a country you didn’t plan to visit.  As part of her own journey as the mother of a child with special needs, Laura traveled to Holland in 1998.

In the resulting Postcards From Holland series, Laura uses images of tulips, windmills, canals and storybook architecture to create her own visual interpretations and metaphors of the hidden beauty, struggle and joy of life in the special needs world.

Postcards From Holland was presented as a solo exhibition in 2002 at the Studio Channel Islands Art Center at CSU Channel Islands in Camarillo alongside essays about children with special needs from parents, professionals and doctors.  Laura continues to explore the imagery of Holland in her art.
